[Gene's so far from being an expert about stuff like this that he feels like an idiot for even beginning to hypothesize why things are heading the way they are, but after talking to Merlin, and all the murders, and how weird and off certain people have felt...

Anyway, he'd rather know a little more about who's been changed by it and who hasn't. Whatever it is. Maybe it's just people being strange.]

Anyone been noticing they're feelin' weird since we got back from port? Or seen anyone else been actin' kinda strange?

[Asiatic, he'd almost want to say, like being here for too long is making people depressed and angry and different, but it's not exactly the same. People got like that in the islands when they'd just been away from home and decent food for too long.]

[Snafu hasn't been in the Pavuvu hut room as much lately, spending more time roaming the ship, restless. He's just been getting angrier and angrier. Gene's voice irritates him, feels like sand rubbing under his skin, and he doesn't know why.]

[It comes out more neutrally than anything else, really, even if there's some confusion coiling in him at the brush off. Not much, but some.]

[Merlin and Scott just seem... off. Other people, too, and he's half wondering if that's part of why his and Jimmy's conversation had gone so badly when they'd first come back, even if he knows that's bullshit. He knows why it went badly.]

Everybody acts fuckin' strange, Sledge. [It comes out flat and harsh, like he thinks Gene's an idiot.] This whole goddamn place is strange.

Yeah, I noticed that, Shelton.

Is somethin' wrong? [Because you've been acting strange, too. Stranger than normal, just like the rest of the people here.]

No. [Even flatter and even harsher, a door slamming on that question.]

Gene's quiet for a moment before probing again, expecting the same kind of reaction, but apparently incapable of pulling away and saying hey, maybe this isn't a good idea.

Shocking.]

I'm gonna be patrollin' with Dillon until Captain Rogers feels better.

[Gene you really need better friends.]

Why?

[It's a bunch of dismissive questions in one: Why with him? Why should Snafu care? Why bother doing it at all?]

[A little wryly:] Because we need to figure out who's killin' everyone?

[And Dillon can defend himself a whole lot easier than Gene can, if someone strong enough to kill a vampire and a super soldier's out there.]

Why the fuck you botherin', Sledgehammer? Everyone just comes back anyhow.

Doesn't mean we shouldn't try and look out for each other.

[For maybe the first time, that sounds like it bothers him. Like he thinks less of Sledge for their different positions here.]

[they hadn't really talked since the first few days after the port. Jimmy had held on to his anger for as long as he could, but it had been feeble to begin with. Still, even if he and Gene hadn't managed to talk about it, what had happened had pressed on him. He hasn't been out much, apart from his shift in the kitchen, food, and the occasional trip to the infirmary.

Well, those trips might be a little more frequent, now. He's still not sure what had happened with Kylar, but whatever it was, it has left him with a broken shoulder. He shows up on the video wearing a sling around his neck.]

I kinda noticed, yeah.

[There's literally only one way Gene can react to that:]

What the hell happened?

[He starts to shrug, and then lets out a bunch of very elaborate curses as it jostles his injured shoulder.]

Kylar happened. [It's said through gritted teeth, but he doesn't sound upset, at least.]

He attacked you?

He's a lot stronger than he looks. [He means no, but he's a little embarrassed by the fact that Kylar more or less patted him on the shoulder and broke Jimmy's bones. It's not exactly a story he needs to get out.]

[Jimmy, someone else having super strength isn't a reflection on your own badassness.......]

You alright?

[You have a lot to learn about 1920s machismo, young cinnamon roll.]

...Yeah. I'm fine. They gave me plenty of painkillers.

[He hesitates for a few seconds, then takes a deep breath. It might be the painkillers talking, or it might just really be him, but he's been feeling guilty.] Sorry for throwing you out last time.

[Nice try, Jimmy, we all know you 1920's people had ridiculous looking underclothes.

Anyway, Jimmy's apology catches Gene a little off guard, because he definitely wasn't expecting one - for a number of reasons.]

You had a right to. [They'd been in Jimmy's room, while they'd both been feeling shitty, and Gene had been saying less than pleasant things about Jimmy's mother. If that was too much - and obviously it was - Gene deserved to be kicked out.] I'm sorry.

[He looks incredibly awkward about it, to be honest, and he knows that the reason he feels like this is less because he didn't have a reason to throw Gene out (because he did, and they both know it) and more because he doesn't want Gene to feel like shit about it.

He nods in lieu of shrugging.] I know. We were both messed up.

Something's definitely up. People don't smell right.

... What do they smell like?

[He doesn't doubt you, but.]
