[The feed clicks on and there's a beat or two of silence. Gene's still trying to wrap his mind around what exactly happened.

Honestly, he's thinking a lot about what Mickey said, about this place seeming like a bad acid trip.]

Anyone know why the lights are goin' on and off?

[Shouldn't things be going back to normal? They stopped whatever that creature was, hadn't they?]

[He's especially worried about Jimmy and Snaf, but Scott and Isaac and everyone, too.]

Yeah. [He still sounds flat, maybe like he's having a hard time internalizing this, because honestly? He is. Everything that happened doesn't make that much sense to him in some fundamental sense, like it was all some sort of very realistic nightmare.] Couldn't do much to stop that, either.

[But he'd been there, and done what he could. At least Cap got out in one piece, mostly.]

It's not the kind of thing you can do on your own, Gene. You wouldn't have made it here without your platoon, right? [Somehow, he doesn't like the thought of Gene feeling this way. Maybe he needs the Marine to be fine for his own, selfish reasons; maybe he just wants him to feel better, as a friend. Either way, he leans forward when he speaks, looking at his warden intently.]

I know. [He does. He'd never be here without Snaf, Burgie, Jay, Bill, Ack Ack, Hillbilly, all the guys of K/3/5, and he'd never try to act like that wasn't true. Never. But that's not really what he meant here, so he clarifies, looking Jimmy in the eye, but kind of wanting to look away, too.]

I mean there's not much a carbine and a side arm are gonna do against somethin' that's bigger than a house.

[He felt more like a liability than a team player, is what he means. It's hard to pull your weight when your target's that big, and even if he'd provided some covering fire, it still hadn't felt like enough. Gene's never felt so useless just being a normal human before.]

And I don't like knowin' you guys were in trouble and there wasn't anything I could do about it.

Nothing much we could do about it, either. [Honestly, for what it's worth, he's a little glad Gene was down with that monster instead of up here with all the little monsters. The drag of exhaustion, the slow gains and big losses, they'd all reminded him too starkly of the war. He'd rather have Gene face something completely unfamiliar than something that could recall his time in Peleliu so easily.

He leans over and smacks Gene on the side of his knee, once. It's not quite a pat, but it's close enough.]

Makes you wish you had some of those magic powers, huh?

[It at least summons something out of him that looks close enough to a tired smile to pass for one. That's something, right?]

Definitely seem like they come in handy. Tryin' to keep up with Cap made me feel really outta shape.

[It's good enough for him, and before he knows it, he passes his hand over Gene's head in what could pass for a paternal ruffle. It's over too soon for that, though, and he sits back again to sip at the vodka.]

That guy makes everyone feel out of shape.

[The gesture startles Gene enough that he ducks his head and flashes a small smile almost before he even realizes he's doing it. Again, he's reminded of their counterparts from the breach, and again it's a fleeting thought, but... it's good to be here and know Jimmy's here and alive and for the moment out of the line of fire.

Of course, he doesn't say any of that.]

You seen him in action?

At the gym. [Not that he actually works out at the gym, but whatever.]

I wouldn't like to go up against him.

I'd like to think you're not gonna have a reason to.

[Jimmy's got bad decision making skills sometimes, but he doesn't seem like he'd think yeah, sure, pissing off Steve Rogers is a really great plan.]

[He smiles a little, pressing down on the impulse to ruffle Gene's hair again.]

That one's gonna be easy to avoid, yeah.

Good. [Gene flashes a smile, and it actually looks like it breaks through the fatigue and everything else for longer than a fleeting moment. Not much longer than one, mind, but maybe that's enough for now.]

Sorry for complain'.

[He leans back and finishes the glass in his hand, then immediately pours himself a new glass.]

You have nothing to be sorry about, Gene.

You need me to get anything else, let me know. [Since he's assuming you don't want to and won't really want to get up and wander around for a couple days if you don't have to.] Unless you've got enough food and books to last a couple days.

I'll drag myself to the cafeteria if I want any food. [he raps his knuckles on the table, weakly]
